1 to 2 Alcoholic Drinks a Day May Cause Liver Cirrhosis – Moving from moderate to heavy drinking (1 drink/day for women, and 2 a day for men), can increase the risk of liver disease, says the World Health Organization (WHO).

A new worldwide study shows that unlike previous research which linked total amount of alcohol consumption per year to liver cirrhosis, it is a high daily consumption of alcohol that is the strongest predictor of the disease. In fact, the number of heavy daily drinkers increase the country’s cirrhosis burden.

For the study, researchers analyzed data from the WHO’s Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health, and found that 6% of deaths around the world are caused by alcohol drinking, and most of them from damage to the liver.

Cirrhosis is a late stage of liver scarring that occurs as a result of other liver problems such as hepatitis and chronic alcohol abuse. As damage to the liver increases, more scar tissue is formed and prevents the liver from functioning. Early diagnosis of liver cirrhosis can be treated and further damage can be prevented; advanced liver cirrhosis, however, is fatal.
