5 Food Ingredients That Have a Long Shelf Life

Most spices lose their flavor after a while, but these 5 food ingredients have a long shelf life: sugar, salt, honey, pure vanilla extract, and corn starch.

The regular store-bought sugar is pretty much good for life as it does not support microbial growth. According to sugar manufacturer, Domino, it will last forever if stored properly in a dry environment. Brown sugar and powdered sugar, however, are best used within two years. Brown sugar tends to harden when kept for a long time, but it can be easily softened in the microwave and used.

Honey can also last a long time mainly because of its chemical composition. How it’s stored also makes a difference to its shelf life. Like sugar, honey needs to be stored in airtight containers and in a dry environment. The same goes for corn starch and salt. Iodized salt, however, lasts only for about five years. More….
