Here are 6 reasons for spending time in the sun, if you’re cooped up in the house all the time.

Exposing yourself to sunlight in the morning is the best way to set your internal clock and getting your body to adjust to a new time zone. Sunshine helps regulate the hormone, melatonin, that regulates your circadian rhythm. According to research, exposing yourself to sunlight for an hour every morning can help you sleep better.

Sunshine can also keep your weight under control. A recent study shows that those who catch some early morning sunshine have a lower body-mass index (BMI) than those who don’t.

In winter, exposure to natural light can help ward off the winter blues. In extreme cases of seasonal affective disorder (SAD), as it’s known, doctors recommend phototherapy or artificial light that mimics sunlight.

We all know that sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D, which in turn,  helps our bodies absorb calcium. Together, vitamin D and calcium make our bones strong.

Research also suggests that vitamin D can help protect us from some types of cancer, such as breast and prostate, as well as high blood pressure and heart disease.

If you’re deficient in vitamin D, supplements and foods that have been fortified with the vitamin can help, but overdoing the supplements may cause kidney problems. The best way to get your vitamin D is through exposure to sunlight for about 15 minutes. More….
