A Brain Hormone Could Improve Diabetes Treatment

A Brain Hormone Could Improve Diabetes Treatment – Scientists from a US and UK university have identified a brain hormone that senses low blood glucose levels in the body and triggers a response to it.

The hormone cholecystokinin (CCK), is buried deep within a region of the brain called the parabrachial nucleus. Researchers Professor Lora Heisler and Dr Martin Myers said that they knew that CCK cells modify appetite and anxiety but didn’t see the link to blood sugar levels.  blood sugar levels.

Scientist scan use this information to figure out a way to target the CCK system with drugs in order to prevent conditions like hypoglycemia or low blood sugar, which can lead to seizures, unconsciousness, brain damage and even death.

Professor Heisler and Dr Myers collaborated with colleagues from the universities of Aberdeen, Michigan, Cambridge, Edinburgh and Chicago to complete the study and their findings are now published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
