A new study has found that abdominal fat may increase the risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a group of lung disease like bronchitis, which block air flow and make it difficult to breathe. Being underweight is also bad, according to researchers who studied data from over 100,000 patients aged 50 to 70 years from 1995 to 2005.

Participants answered questions about their physical activity, smoking, incidence of COPD, body weight and size. Researchers found that after ten years, over 3,000 participants developed COPD, and they were either severely obese or underweight but not overweight.

In women, a waist size of 11o centimeters or more, and in men, 118 centimeters or more was linked to a 72% increased risk for the disease. Being underweight increased the risk by 56%.

Physical activity reduced the risk by 29% as it help decrease inflammation in the body. The study was published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. More….
