Aerobic exercise may improve memory, new studies show. According to researchers at Michigan State University, aerobic exercise seems to have a beneficial effect on hippocampus, the part of the brain that controls memory. The hippocampus shrinks as we age, causing memory problems. Those suffering from Alzheimer’s also experience a greater than normal shrinkage in hippocampus.

Studies show that aerobic exercise can not only slow age-related shrinking of the hippocampus, but may even reverse some of the damage that’s already occurred. Researchers observed that seniors who followed a three-day a week walking regimen for one year were able to recover almost two years worth of hippocampus volume.

Aerobic exercise like walking, running, swimming, and cycling also improved memory in college kids who were not physically fit. Researchers also observed that other types of exercise such as weight-lifting and stretches did not have the same effect on brain health. More….
