American MERS Patient to Be Released from Hospital

The first American patient who was diagnosed with MERS (Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome), may soon be released from an Indiana hospital, as he’s making good progress. He will, however, be isolated at home as a precaution, although the disease is not highly contagious. His family members have been advised to stay home or to wear masks if they leave home.

None of his family members and others who have had contact with him have tested positive for the virus. The virus has an incubation period of 2 to 14 days, and usually shows up in 5 days.

It’s not known how the patient contracted the disease; he doesn’t remember working with a MERS patient when he was in Riyadh, but said that there were some cases of MERS in the hospital where he worked. More ….
