Antioxidant Reservatrol Doesn’t Protect against Cancer

A new study found that the antioxidant, reservatrol, doesn’t protect against cancer or heart disease. The antioxidant is found in red wine, grapes, and chocolate.

The study involved 783 men and 65 women from the Chianti region in Italy. Their health and reservatrol consumption was tracked between the years 1998 to 2009. The study showed that high or low intake of reservatrol via food did not make any difference in rates of cancer, cardiovascular disease, inflammation or death. It did not seem to increase longevity either.

This seems to confirm researchers’ earlier suspicions that people would need to consume a lot more reservatrol than can be gotten in food to make an impact on health and lifespan. If people already have a disease, reservatrol may make a positive difference, but consuming it in the hopes of preventing disease may not work.

The results were published in JAMA Internal Medicine. More ….
