Antioxidant Supplements Don’t Prevent Cancer

Antioxidant supplements don’t prevent cancer, according to researchers who reviewed previous studies conducted on antioxidant supplements and cancer.

The review, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, cautions people against using antioxidant supplements to reduce their risk of cancer. Far from reducing the risk, these supplements may have damaging effects on those already at risk for cancer.

A recent animal study showed that in mice with lung cancer that were given the antioxidants, vitamin E and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), there was a rapid progression of the disease.

Consuming natural antioxidants are still the best way to reap their health benefits. Antioxidants are chemical substances found in fruits and vegetables which help prevent cell damage from oxidation. However, even these can’t protect you from years of unhealthy living, researchers say. More….
