Apple’s Subsidized Egg-Freezing Is Cool, but a Little Creepy
Apple’s Subsidized Egg-Freezing Is Cool, but a Little Creepy – Apple’s news this week that it planned to cover the cost of egg-freezing for female employees elicited a complex reaction.
As usual, Apple’s not talking. But the company’s not alone in offering this new perk. Facebook, for one, began covering the cost for egg freezing up to $20,000 – the same as Apple – back in January.
The egg-freezing technology just went mainstream about two years ago, so perhaps it’s too soon to tell if this will become one of those now-standard extras for tech employees — like free lunches and snacks — that are now taken for granted.
According to Marcia Inhorn, a Yale University professor and medical anthropologist, there are other employers aside from Apple and Facebook that cover the cost of egg-freezing. The coverage is usually wrapped into generous insurance plans that also include other infertility treatments, like in-vitro fertilization, she says.
