Applying Eyeliner on the Inside of Lashes Is Unsafe

Applying Eyeliner on the Inside of Lashes Is Unsafe – If you like to use an eyeliner to accentuate your eyes, where you apply it is critical.

A new study found that eyeliner applied to the inside of lashes can cause contamination and irritate your eyes. In the study conducted by Alison Ng and her team at University of Waterloo in Canada, the team looked at how differently eyeliner migrated into the tear film of the eye when applied in two different ways: inside the lash line and outside the lash line.

The study involved three female participants from the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences at Cardiff University in Wales, who were between ages 26 and 30 and had no known eye conditions. One applied eyeliner inside the lash line, close to the eye, while the others applied it to the skin outside of the lash line. Researchers then took a video of their eyes after 5 to 10 minutes and counted how many particles of the eyeliner had moved into the eye.

Researchers found that 15% to 20% of particles from the eyeliner had moved into the eye, when the eyeliner was applied inside the lash line. Researchers took another video of their eyes two hours later, and found there was little or no eyeliner remaining in the tear film of the eyes.

Ng says that eyeliner in the tear film of the eye can cause a lot of irritation and discomfort, particularly for those with dry and sensitive eyes. Those wearing contact lenses also face problems as the eyeliner particles bind to the lenses and reduce the quality of vision. Over long term, this can cause blurred vision.

Researchers recommend keeping the eyeliner away from the inner eyelid to avoid complications. The best way to apply eyeliner is to apply it to the outside of the lashes along the eyelid.
