Balloon Pill – The New Weight-Loss Pill

Many Americans are going to Mexico for the “balloon pill” so they can lose weight.

The pill is actually a device call Obalon. The pill is attached to a catheter that allows doctors to inflate the balloon once the pill is swallowed. Doctors use nitrogen gas to inflate the pill into a small balloon, which makes patients feel full immediately and eat less. Patients can keep the pill for 30 days, after which, doctors need to remove it via endoscopy. The treatment can last for 90 days and during this time, two more balloons can be added.

Patients need to follow strict guidelines, which include no solid foods the first three days and 90-minute workouts a day. The pill is highly controversial and has not been approved by the US Food and drug Administration (FDA). It is available at a weight-loss clinic in Tijuana, Mexico. More….
