Bergamot Orange Extract May Lower Cholesterol – Bergamot orange extract has shown promising results in reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase good (HDL) cholesterol in two animal studies and 4 human trials.

Bergamot orange is a cross between two orange species, and is grown in Italy, France, Ivory Coast Africa, Turkey, and Mauritius. The fruit contains two compunds, brutieridin and meltidin, which have statin-like effects. The two compunds belong to a class of flavone glycosides, a group of natural antioxidant compounds that are found in various fruits, vegetables and herbs. These compounds have also been shown to fight against cancer and improve brain function.

In the study, 77 adult participants who took 1,000 milligrams of the extract daily for a month saw a a significant reduction in their LDL cholesterol levels. The study notes that doctors were able to reduce the statin drug to half the prescribed dose by using the bergamot extract.

Researchers also found that bergamot reduces excess lipids in the blood, which cause atherosclerosis – hardening of the arteries that can result in heart attacks and strokes.
