Blood Pressure on the High End of Normal May Lead to Heart Problems – A new study found that young adults with high blood pressure at the high end of the normal range, may be at risk for cardiac dysfunction, particularly associated with the left ventricle, in middle age.

The study was led by Dr. Joao Lima, from the cardiology division at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. For the study, researchers tracked 2,500 young men and women aged 18 to 30 years for a period of 25 years. During this period, researchers evaluated participants’ health 7 times, and took their blood pressure readings and also performed cardiac imaging tests.

Researchers found a link between elevated bood pressure levels in young adulthood and cardiac problems in middle age. Though it was not a cause and effect link, researchers say that young adults should monitor their blood pressure and take preventive measures to control it in order to avoid heart problems later. They recommend reducing sodium intake, maintaining a healthy weight and getting regular physical activity, and if diagnosed with high blood pressure, making sure to take their medication.
