Blue Bell ice cream recalls all its products due to listeria – Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries issued a voluntary recall Monday night for all of its products on the market after two samples of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream tested positive for listeria, a potentially deadly bacteria.

Blue Bell’s chief executive Paul Kruse said in a statement, the company “cannot say with certainty” how the bacteria was introduced to its facilities. Blue Bell issued the recall that includes ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks distributed in 23 states and international locations because other products “have the potential to be contaminated,” according to the statement.

Kruse said that removing all the products from the market is the right thing to do. The Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries has been in business for 108 years, and last month was the first time the company had to recall any of its products. The company pulled its ice cream from store shelves last month after US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that listeria from their product had caused three deaths at a Kansas hospital.

The company has started a new testing system to test all its products for listeria, and will release the products into the market only if the tests are negative.

The bacterium Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious infections, particularly in children, the elderly, and those with weak immune systems.Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and a stiff neck. The incubation period for the bacteria is 3 to 70 days.
