Blueberries May Prevent Hypertension – A new study conducted by Florida State University researchers shows that eating blueberries every day can have beneficial effects on blood pressure.

For the study, researchers chose to focus on postmenopausal women as they have a higher incidence of high blood pressure than women. Participants were in early stages of hypertension. The women were randomly given either 22 g of freeze-dried blueberry powder, the equivalent to approximately one cup of fresh blueberries, or 22 g of control powder for 8 weeks.

Women who received the blueberry powder had reduced their systolic blood pressure by 5.1 percent and their mean diastolic blood pressure (DBP) was by 6.3 percent. This group also showed a reduction in arterial stiffness. Those who received the placebo, however, did not see any benefits.

According to the lead author, Dr. Sarah Johnson, preventive strategies such as dietary and lifestyle changes need to be implemented, particularly in women who are pre-hypertensive, or in the first stage of hypertension.
