Boy Whose Tumor Treatment Sparked Manhunt Is Cured: Report

The parents of a five-year-old British cancer patient — who sparked an international manhunt when they took him out of the hospital against doctors’ advice — claim their son has been cured of a brain tumor.

Ashya King’s parents were arrested in August after they removed him from a UK hospital against doctors’ wishes to pursue proton beam therapy abroad in Prague.

Proton beam therapy is an alternative to radiotherapy and is not covered by Britain’s National Health Service. The therapy targets the tumor directly, and does not affect the surrounding tissue, and also has fewer side-effects. The Kings thought that conventional radiotherapy may not work for their son, and feared it might “kill him or turn him into a vegetable.”

Brett King and his wife Neghemeh told Britain’s the Sun newspaper that scans now show their son is cancer-free. Brett King said in an interview published Monday, “We are absolutely delighted.”
