Breakthrough? Non-invasive ultrasound could fight Alzheimer’s disease – Could ultrasound be the answer to Alzheimer’s disease?

A team of researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia managed to successfully restore memories to mice by using the simple and non-invasive technology. According to the researchers, the potential method, which is already being hailed as a “breakthrough”, breaks down the neurotoxic amyloid plaques that cause memory loss and loss of cognitive function.

Although the human brain is different from the mouse brain, the team believes that, if applied early, the ultrasound approach could prove much more effective than all existing Alzheimer’s drugs, which are only effective for a short period of time – and don’t remove plaques.

The Australian team found that ultrasound waves stimulated a particular kind of cell in the brain, called microglia, which work as the brain’s immune system, and significantly reduced the plaque in 75% of the mice that received this treatment.

Over 5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s, a neurodegenerative disease which causes memory loss, behavioral changes, confusion, and disorientation.
