Breast Implant Linked to Rare Form of Cancer

Breast Implant Linked to Rare Form of Cancer – There have been 18 cases of a rare breast cancer, anaplastic large cell lymphoma, since 2011, linked to silicone breast implants.

According to France’s National Institute of Cancer (INCa), the connection between silicone breast implants and the rare cancer has been clearly established. Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma but one of the more common subtypes of T-cell lymphoma.

ALCL can initially appear either in the skin, in lymph nodes, or in organs throughout the body and cause symptoms such as painless swelling of lymph nodes, rapid weight loss, and tiredness.

Because the disease is very rare, France’s health minister, Marisol Touraine told reporters, “We do not recommend that women carrying these implants have them removed.” But from now on, breast implants in France will include a clear warning about the risk of the cancer.

Though Touraine said that no particular brand of implant was to be blamed, the Parisien daily reported that 14 of the 18 cases of the rare cancer were found in women with breast implants made by US pharmaceutical company Allergan.

In a statement, Allergan said it is collaborating closely with the health authorities and the drug agency ANSM (French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety).
