Broccoli Sprouts Can Help against Air Pollution

Broccoli sprouts can help against air pollution, a new study shows. Compounds in broccoli can help us flush out pollutants like benzene, usually found in paint thinners and car exhaust fumes.

Scientists conducted the study in China, where air quality is terrible. Study participants who drank tea made with broccoli sprouts for 12 weeks, were able to excrete the pollutant benzene through urine by 61%, and acrolein by 23. Acrolein is a pollutant found in tobacco smoke and power plant emissions.

While the sprouts have more of the pollutant-fighting compounds, regular broccoli has some, too. However, you’d need to eat about 1 1/2 cups of broccoli a day to reap any health benefits.
