This cabbage curry is the easiest side you can make for your meal. Cabbage and onions along with a touch of tamarind make this a mouth-watering dish. This vegetarian curry goes well with plain rice.

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 cups cabbage, chopped into medium pieces
  • 1 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 5 tsp vegetable oil
  • 1-2 tsp jaggery, grated (optional)
  • Salt to taste

For Masala

  • 1 tbsp dalia (roasted bengal gram)
  • 1/4 cup coconut, freshly grated (or dry)
  • 4-5 green chillies (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tbsp cilantro (coriander leaves), chopped
  • 1/4 tsp tamarind paste

Preparation

  1. In a small grinder (coffee grinder), blend all the masala ingredients with a little water into a smooth paste and set aside.
  2. Heat the oil in a wide and shallow skillet, and add the onions. Saute until lightly browned. Add the cabbage, along with turmeric powder and salt, and saute for a couple of minutes.
  3. Add the ground masala paste, stir well until the cabbage is coated. Add the grated jaggery and mix well. Cover and cook until the cabbage is cooked, and the raw flavor of the masala is gone.
  4. Serve this thick cabbage curry with rice, ghee (clarified butter), and pappadums.
