Vegans and people who are lactose intolerant are particularly likely to suffer from calcium deficiency and may benefit from taking a daily supplement. Be aware that phytic and oxalic acid, which are found in plant sources like spinach and soy, can prevent optimal absorption of calcium.

More than 2,500 milligrams of calcium a day can result in negative effects like impaired kidney function, decreased mineral absorption and hypercalcemia, which is high calcium levels in the blood.

Calcium is essential for bone growth and nervous system functions, but too much of the mineral can be harmful. Always talk to your doctor before beginning a new supplement or diet program.
