California Enacts Nation’s First Statewide Plastic Bag Ban – California Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill banning single-use plastic bags Tuesday, making California the first state to bar their use. Environmentalists have hailed the law as a major victory, and plastics manufacturers are already seeking to overturn it.
Brown said in a statement on his website, “This bill is a step in the right direction and it reduces the torrent of plastic polluting our beaches, parks and even the vast ocean itself.” Prior to Tuesday’s enactment of the statewide ban, 120 local governments in California had already banned single-use plastic bags. The law bars grocery stores and pharmacies from offering single-use plastic bags as of July of 2015, and will include convenience stores by 2016.
