Canola Oil Beneficial for Type 2 Diabetes
New research suggests that canola oil may be beneficial for type 2 diabetes. Canola oil is extracted from rapeseed and has only 7% saturated fat, almost 50% less than olive oil.
In a study, a group of participants were given bread made with canola oil, and another with whole-wheat diet. Those who ate bread made with canola oil not only saw a reduction in their blood glucose levels but also in their LDL or bad cholesterol. According to researchers, the reduction in cholesterol could reduce cardiovascular events by 7%, and was equal to taking a 20 milligram statin drug, that is, double the regular 10 mg dose.
Patients on the whole-wheat diet experienced improved blood flow, when compared to those on the canola-bread diet, confirming earlier studies that have shown whole wheat foods to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
The study was published in the journal, Diabetes Care. More….
