Chikungunya Epidemic in Puerto Rico

According to health officials, Puerto Rico has a chikungunya epidemic.  The number of cases have increased to 200 since May, when the first case was reported. Officials say the majority of the cases are mainly in and around the capital, San Juan and neighboring areas.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus, and symptoms include fever, joint pain, heachache, muscle pain, and rash. Though not fatal, symptoms can be severe, and in some cases, joint pain can persist for months. There is no vaccine for the disease. More….
