Daytime Sleepiness and Heart Disease

Daytime sleepiness and heart disease are linked, according to new research based on a study of over 84,000 US women. Researchers say that daytime sleepiness is more a symptom than cause; the real culprits are inadequate sleep, and sleep disorders like snoring and sleep apnea. Sleep disorders are risk factors for diabetes, stroke, and heart attack.

Study participants answered question on sleep duration, sleep disturbances, snoring, and shift work, and were also tracked from 2001 to 2009, for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, and depression, Five percent of the women reported being sleepy during the day, almost every day, and these women were three times more likely to be diagnosed with heart disease than those who didn’t.

Researchers suggest that people who are sleepy during the day should see their doctors to identify underlying causes and rule out risk factors for heart and other diseases. More….
