Demand for Plastic Surgery Increases in US

| February 27, 2015 Comment

Demand for Plastic Surgery Increases in US, according to a new report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). In 2014, there was a 3% increase in plastic surgery, but mainly for minimally invasive procedures.

Breast reconstructive surgeries rose by 7% last year – over 100,000 surgeries were performed. Dr. Scot Glasberg, president of the ASPS, says, that breast reconstructive surgeries for breast cancer patients “can greatly improve a patient’s quality of life and self-image.” However, he points out that many breast cancer patients don’t go in for reconstruction after a mastectomy because they’re not aware of all of the available options, and urges doctors to do a better job of educating patients about their choices.

The report notes a 1% drop in breast augmentation surgeries and a rise in butt-lifts and minimally invasive surgeries such as botox, soft tissue fillers, chemical peels and laser hair removal procedures. Buttock augmentation rose by nearly 15% in the past year.

And if you think it’s only the women lining up for some cosmetic work, think again. More men opted for cosmetic surgery in 2014 than in previous years, with pectoral implants the most in demand (208% increase), followed by breast reduction, which increased by 29% in the last 14 years.
