dhokla

Dhokla is a popular appetizer from Western India. Made the traditional way, this snack or breakfast item can take a lot of time, so the instant mix is a boon to anyone who wants dhokla now and right now! Try the MTR brand of dhokla mix as it works very well. It takes only a couple of minutes to mix it and the rest is taken care of by your trusted pressure cooker!

Made with chana dal (yellow lentils/bengal gram) and semolina, the soft, fluffy dhoklas make a healthy and tasty snack or breakfast.

Servings: 2-3 ( makes 12 pieces)
Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups or 1/2 a packet of MTR dhokla ready mix
  • 2 tbsp + 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • Asafoetida (hing) powder, a pinch
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • Red chilli powder, a pinch (optional)
  • 2 tbsp cilantro (coriander leaves), finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp coconut, freshly grated

Preparation

  1. In a mixing bowl, add the dhokla mix, 2 tbsp oil, and just enough water to make a paste. Add 2-3 tbsp more water to make a slightly flowing batter.
  2. Brush a 4-inch plate or a 4-inch pizza pan with oil. Pour the dhokla batter into the pan, place in a pressure cooker, and steam the dhoklas for 12-13 minutes.
  3. Let the dhokla cool for 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edges to loosen the cooked dhokla. Cut into small squares.
  4. Heat 1 tsp oil in a small pan. Add the asafoetida powder and mustard seeds and fry until the seeds pop. Add the red chilli powder and pour the seasoning over on the dhokla.
  5. Garnish the dhokla with coconut and cilantro and serve plain or with a sweet date, tamarind or green chutney.
