Diabetes Rates Continue to Rise in US

A new study shows that diabetes rates grew from 5.5% during 1988-1994 to 9.3% between 2005 and 2010 in the US. Prediabetes rates went up from 6% to more than 12% during the study period. Obesity rates among diabetics grew from 44% to 61%. According to researchers, the rise in diabetes rates can be attributed to obesity.

Type 2 diabetes is more common in the US than type 1 and experts say that if we could control obesity and get people to exercise, it would bring down the numbers, but doing it is the challenge. The study was published in Annals of Internal Medicine. More….
