Diet Pill Contrave Approved by FDA

A new diet pill, Contrave, has been been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The diet pill is made by Orexigen Therapeutics Inc; it’s not known when it will become available in the market.

The new pill is only the third obesity drug that ‘s been approved in the past decade. FDA delayed the approval by three months as it worked with the company to include adequate warnings on the label about the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors the drug poses.

Many diet pills have a tough time in the market as these are, often, not reimbursed by health insurance companies. Insurance companies are not convinced about the long-term efficacy of such diet pills, and are also concerned about patient dropping out of the treatment, and side effects of the pills. Only 30% to 40% of health insurance companies pay for obesity treatments. According to experts, companies might provide coverage if they’re convinced that the diet pills also provide other benefits such as reducing the risk of heart attacks and hospitalizations.
