Dietary Supplement 4-MU Offers New Treatment Option for Prostate Cancer

Dietary Supplement 4-MU Offers New Treatment Option for Prostate Cancer – For a change, there’s some positive news about a dietary supplement. Researchers at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, found that an over-the-counter supplement 4-MU can help prevent and treat prostate cancer, and stop the cancer from metastasizing.

The supplement is called 4-methylumbelliferone (4-MU) and is commonly used in Europe and Asia to improve liver health. In the study funded by the National Cancer Institute, researchers used the supplement to treat mice models of prostate cancer at different stages of the disease, and stopped the treatment at 28 weeks.

Researchers found that at 8 to 12 weeks, the supplement was able to arrest the development and growth of the disease. At 22 weeks, they found that small cancers had stopped growing, and in some cases even regressed. In contrast, 60% of the mice in the control group experienced a spread of the cancer to even distant organs. None of the mice on 4-MU saw a spread of the disease.

According to the lead author, Vinata B. Lokeshwar, 4-MU stopped the growth of new blood vessels, thus cutting off blood supply to the cancer tumors and preventing their growth and spread, and the supplement did this without causing any toxic side-effects on the mice. Researchers also found that early treatment with the supplement provided better protection against prostate cancer.

Lokeshwar hopes to conduct clinical trials with 4-MU soon, because “4-MU has a long history as a safe oral nutritional supplement.”

If you can’t buy it in the US, maybe your doctor can. I’d like to know what countries in Europe and Asia sell it over the counter as mentioned in the University of Miami article.
