This is simply not true. In fact, not only do most Americans consume up to TWICE their daily protein needs, the average vegetarian typically consumes about 1 times MORE than is recommended. Also, the complex combining of foods vegetarians used to do, like rice and beans, for example, to create a “complete” protein, is now considered UNNECESSARY. Just eat a variety of foods and you should be fine.

Plant foods offer ABUNDANT protein. Vegetables are around 23% protein on average; beans and other legumes 28%; grains 13%; and even fruit has 5.5%. For comparison, human breast milk is ONLY 5% protein, and is designed for the time in our lives when our protein needs are as HIGH as they’ll ever be.

Diseases caused by EXCESS protein consumption, like cancer of the breast, colon, prostate, pancreas; osteoporosis and kidney stones are widespread in the USA. Since meat is excessively high in protein, it might be smart to reduce intake from animal sources for protein-rich plant foods.
