Dr. Oz Under Fire: Doctors Want Columbia University to Remove Him from Faculty – Dr. Mehmet Oz has come under fire again over his on-air medical advice and this time, his latest critics appear to be looking to have him fired from his day job.
A group of 10 physicians, surgeons and professors recently penned a scathing letter to Columbia’s University Dean of Medicine Lee Goldman, saying that the Dr. Oz host’s presence on the school’s faculty is “unacceptable” and that he promotes “quack treatments.” They’re dismayed that he’s still on the faculty. Dr. Joel Tepper said in a CNN interview that “If you present statements as data, and as being fact-driven, that does not represent the norm from an academic institution. That is grounds for dismissal.”
As of Friday, he remains on staff, as the vice-chair of Columbia University’s surgery department. The 54-year-old cardiothoracic surgeon and popular Emmy-winning TV host, who has been criticized before about some of the health advice and so-called “miracle” products he has promoted on his show, The Dr. Oz Show.
Columbia University is coming to Dr. Oz’s defense stating that it is committed to “upholding faculty members’ freedom of expression for statements they make in public discussion.”
