Drink Water to Cut Your Risk for Kidney Stones

Drink Water to Cut Your Risk for Kidney Stones – Drinking lots of water can cut kidney stones risk by 50%, according to new research.

Kidney stones are small, hard mineral deposits that form in the kidneys, and these occur when urine becomes concentrated. Passing kidney stones can be painful but usually, they don’t cause any permanent damage.

The new review looked at nine previous studies that included nearly 274,000 people. More than 550 people had a history of kidney stones. The review found that those who produced 2 to 2.5 liters of urine were 50 percent less likely to form kidney stones than those who produced less urine. To produce that much urine, the participants would have had drank eight to ten 8-ounce glasses of water a day.

Water dilutes the concentration of waste products in the urine. Drinking lots of water also causes frequent urination, which means, stone-causing minerals get excreted quickly, and are less likely to settle and bond in the kidneys and urinary tract.

Dr. Wisit Cheungpasitporn, of the Mayo Clinic, says, increasing water intake  has long been suggested as a simple preventive measure for kidney stones, and this review confirms that recommendation.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, more than half a million people visit emergency rooms for kidney stone problems every year.
