Early Help Can Help Autistic Children Develop Normally

A new study shows that early help can help autistic children develop normally. At-risk babies whose parents received 12 week of special training in how to develop their babies’ social communication and playing skills, were able to catch up with babies who were normal and had no autism symptoms.

Of the seven babies the researchers studied, five developed normally by age three and showed no signs of autism-spectrum disorder (ASD), despite the fact that four had older siblings with autism. According to researchers, repeated social stimulation that is provided in a fun and appealing way to the babies helps them learn social skills better. Parents were taught to incorporate talking, singing, and nurturing in routine activities like diaper changing, thus optimizing every opportunity for interaction.

Autism can be reliably diagnosed at age two. Children who are two years old  or younger who receive intense therapy tend to develop better, so it’s critical for parents to be tuned in to their babies’ social development early on. More….
