Eat More Protein for Breakfast to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes – Regulating blood sugar levels can be a challenge for people with type 2 diabetes.

Researchers say that what you eat and when you eat can make a big difference to managing blood sugar levels. University of Missouri researchers Jill Kanaley and her team monitored blood glucose and other stomach hormones in type 2 diabetics after breakfast and lunch. Participants were asked to eat either a high-protein or high-carbohydrate breakfast, and a standard amount of protein and carbohydrates for lunch.

Researchers found that those who ate a high-protein breakfast had lower glucose levels after the meal. After lunch, these participants experienced a rise in insulin which showed that their bodies were working well to regulate their blood glucose levels.

Kanaley says that eating the right breakfast is key to maintaining glucose levels the rest of the day. It is reaaly important for type 2 diabetics to understand how their bodies respond to different foods and consistently track their glucose levels so they can figure out the best way to manage them. Adding 25 to 30 grams of protein at breakfast should help.
