Ebola survivors Suffering from Post-Ebola Syndrome – Many Ebola patients who survived an Ebola infection have been complaining about the after-effects of the disease including vision problems, joint pain, hair and memory loss and anxiety attacks.

An Ebola survivor in Liberia, Romeo Doe, says he feels a pressure and pain in his eyes and his vision has been affected. Some female survivors reported that they have stopped menstruating, and there are concerns that the virus can remain in semen for months.

Doctors don’t know how long these after-effects will last or how many survivors will be affected. Overall, about half of Ebola survivors have reported declining health. According to experts, since Ebola virus attacks the immune system, survivors are left with a weakened immune system, making them more vulnerable to other diseases.

The Ebola outbreak is subsiding but the after-effects linger on, worrying the survivors and preventing them from leading a “normal” life. Dan Kelly, founder of the non-profit organization Wellbody Alliance and a doctor specializing in infectious diseases, it’s important to follow up with survivors in order to study the after-effects and figure out how best to address them.
