Exercise and Menopause

New research shows that exercise can help slow physical and mental decline after menopause. Mild and gentle exercise won’t cut it though. It has to be moderate to vigorous exercise that gets you to break a sweat.

Current guidelines suggest 30 minutes of moderate exercise for older women, but based on the new study, researchers recommend 30-45 minutes of vigorous activity that increases the heart rate and makes women sweat. They also suggest that women not used to such vigorous activity should talk to their exercise physiologist to help them get to that level.

According to experts, staying active is important for everyone, but menopausal women can derive more benefits from it. It can do the work of estrogen by increasing blood flow and supply of oxygen to the brain, and by building muscles and strengthening the entire skeletal frame, thus slowing physical and cognitive decline.
