Exercise Has a Greater Impact on Weight As We Age Than Diet – As we age, our diet gets better but our physical activity declines, and this can make managing weight a lot more difficult.

A new study looked at nearly 5,000 American adults aged 20 to 70 and gathered information on their weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and diet from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The study found that making changes to diet doesn’t have much impact on weight in older adults. In fact, those who rely mainly on diet end up gaining weight back shortly after losing it, and also struggle with nutritional deficiencies. Exercise helps keep the weight off longer because it speeds up the metabolism.

The current obesity rates among Americans is also because of the reduced physical activity. Sedentary jobs, and modern conveniences have resulted in obesity, which can pose a great risk for other health problems like diabetes and heart disease. According to the lead author of the study Russell Pate, American adults should focus on meeting the federal guidelines for physical activity, which 150 minutes of moderate to intense activity every week. Exercise helps burn more calories and build muscle mass, and improves overall health.
