FDA Issues Warnings about Wrinkle Creams

FDA Issues Warnings about Wrinkle Creams – The US Food and Drug Administration has sent out warning letters to five companies that make wrinkle creams because of false claims and false advertising.

Since November 2014, the FDA has been closely examining the tall claims some of the companies make about their products. The latest warning letter was sent to Strivectin. Strivectin’s anti-wrinkle creams are sold at large retailers like Costco and Nordstrom.

The letters object to language used on the company website which classifies the product as a drug. Strivectin says its “Advanced Tightening Neck Cream,” can “restore the elastin fiber architecture, providing noticeable lift and improving resistance to gravity. According to the FDA, by using this kind of language, the company is “actually claiming that product is a drug.”

Since receiving the warning letter, Strivectin has changed the website copy for its product; it now says, “Over time, the visible effects of gravity appear reversed for even more refined and toned definition of the neck line, profile, and décolleté.” The company also says that the efficacy of its products have been confirmed by clinical trials.

According to New York dermatologist, Dr. Fayne Frey, anti-aging products don’t do much beyond hydrating the superficial layers of your skin and temporarily smoothing out wrinkles.

The FDA points out that though these companies make drug claims for their anti-wrinkle creams, they sell them as cosmetics, and therefore, it does not evaluate them for safety and effectiveness.
