FDA Warning on Pain Shots Too Late

The US Food and Drug Administration’s  (FDA) recent warning on pain shots or corticosteroid shots for neck and back pain, are too mild and have come too late, according to a patient advocate. The steroid shots can cause serious injuries, and in some cases, paralysis, or even death.

A 2007 survey of doctors revealed 78 cases of patients who suffered serious injuries and side effects because of the steroid shots, and 13 of them died. The pain medication is administered in the spine, and in the US, doctors administer 9 million of these epidurals a year. The shots are restricted in some countries like New Zealand.

The FDA says it has appointed an advisory committee of experts to look into the issue. More….
