Fertility Treatment and Pregnancy Mix-Up

An Italian woman who underwent fertility treatment last year, became pregnant with twins, only to learn three months later, that there had been a mix-up, and the embryos implanted were not hers and her partner’s. The Roman healthy ministry is investigating this issue after learning about the genetic imcompatibility of the couple and the embryos. Three other couples received treatment that day, and it’s not known whether the mix-up was an accident or was deliberate.

There have been two cases of embryo mix-ups in the US. In 2000, a San Francisco woman was implanted with another couple’s embryo, and today, shares custody of the child with the biological parents. The most recent case is that of an Ohio woman who gave birth to a baby boy, and later, gave him up to his biological parents. More
