Foods That Can Be Poisonous

Some common foods can be poisonous, according to experts. Potatoes, for instance, can develop a greenish tint just below the peel, if exposed to too much light. This is caused by a toxic chemical called solanine. Eating such greenish potatoes can cause vomiting and diarrhea which can last from a day to a week.

Rhubarbs are great for you as they’re full of antioxidants and calcium. But don’t eat the roots or leaves – they contain a poisonous substance called oxalic acid, which in small quantities, can cause nausea, vomiting, and weakness. and large doses can even damage your kidneys and liver.

The seeds and pits of many common fruits like apples, apricots, pears, mangoes, peaches, nectarines, and cherries contain amygdalin, a toxic chemical which can turn into another poisonous substance, hydrogen cyanide. This can cause headaches, nausea, seizures, vomiting, and increase your heart rate and blood pressure. But the seeds are harmless unless you chew them or break them open and consume them. More….
