Gas-Sensing Capsules Can Help Diagnose Gut Health – Researchers from RMIT University and Monash University in Melbourne have come up with a pill that can be swallowed to measure the gases in the stomach and send the data to a mobile phone.

The pill has a built-in gas sensor, microprocessor and wireless high-frequency transmitter, and can help provide a more accurate method of measuring intestinal gas. Currently, non-invasive methods like the breath test are used, but according to lead author Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh, such methods don’t provide reliable data. Animal trials have shown that the capsules are safe and reliable.

Measuring intestinal gases accurately can improve our understanding of how some of the gut microrganisms contribute to gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and colon cancer, and help us improve diagnoses and treatments. The capsules can also help us see how certain foods affect our intestines and our health.
