Healthy Gut Bacteria May Help Reduce Obesity and Diabetes

Healthy gut bacteria may help reduce obesity and diabetes rates, according to a new study. There are 160 species of intestinal bacteria which are part of our immune system and protect us from various diseases.

The digestive bacteria or microbiota can be used to determine the risk of diabetes and obesity, and may be used to treat these conditions. The study showed that when compared to healthy participants, those with obesity and type 2 diabetes were missing several important species of bacteria in their guts. More research is need to determine if this is the cause or effect of obesity and diabetes.

Healthy bacteria can be reintroduced either via diet or transplantation via fecal matter if dietary changes don’t work. More….
