Heart Health – Another Reason for Doing Yoga – Researchers have found that yoga can be great for your heart.

If you think only aerobic exercise can be beneficial for your heart, a new study led by Paula Chu at Harvard University, shows that  yoga is as good as aerobic exercise in lowering high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart rate and other heart problems.

The study analyzed several clinical trials involving over 2,000 participants and followed them for 12 weeks to a year. Those who did yoga showed significant improvements in their systolic and diastolic blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart rate, and the improvements were comparable to those doing aerobic exercise such as biking or brisk walking.

Yoga‘s breath control and physical postures can ease stress, boost energy and mood and thereby contribute to heart health. Researchers say that yoga can be used as a complementary physical regimen for promoting heart health.

The study was published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
