High-Carb Diet May Increase Risk of Colorectal Cancer

A high-carb diet may increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Researchers found that gut bacteria breaks down carbohydrates like wheat and rice into metabolites that cause cells in the lining of colon to grow rapidly and form polyps. And polyps can become malignant.

University of Toronto researchers, who conducted the study, also found that a specific type of gut bacteria, clostridia, is responsible for the metabolites. Though they found that antibiotics can be used to target and kill this bacteria, they don’t think it would be a good strategy, as all types of gut bacteria have an important role to play in our health. They recommend a change in diet instead.

More research is needed in humans to understand the role of gut bacteria and carbs in colon cancer. More….
