High-Fat Dairy Foods May Reduce Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

High-Fat Dairy Foods May Reduce Risk of Type 2 Diabetes – Like high-fat yogurt and cheese? They may actually prevent type 2 diabetes, a new study shows.

Researchers looked at 27,000 participants of the Malmo Diet and Cancer study conducted in the early 1990s. They were between the ages of 45 and 74, and were asked to report their eating habits. They found that those who consumed the most high-fat dairy products reduced their risk of type diabetes by 23%. They also found that high meat consumption increased their risk for the disease, no matter what the fat content was.

According to lead author Ulrika Ericson, there seems to be a connection between saturated fatty acids and reduction of diabetes risk, and noted that when compared to meat, these are higher in dairy foods. She also noted that though they took into account factors such as fermentation, calcium, vitamin D, and lifestyle factors like physical activity, other factors may have contributed to the results. For instance, how different components of the foods interact is also important, as researchers found that saturated fat in cheese is less likely to raise cholesterol than saturated fat in butter.

Ericson suggested that instead of focusing on fat, we need to look at what foods we consume, and maintain a well-balanced diet.
