How Shift Work Affects Health – According to a new study, shift work has a huge impact on the health of employees and is likely to lead to obesity and sleep issues, as well as to metabolic disorders, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.

Scientists from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, analyzed data from the Survey of the Health of Wisconsin (SHOW) collected from 2008-2012. Researchers found that shift workers were 13% more likely to be overweight than traditional schedule workers. They also experienced sleep-related problems like insomnia, insufficient sleep, or excessive sleepiness during their wake time.

According to lead investigator Marjory Givens, sleep problems were also linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes, with the link being stronger in those who got less than 7 hours of sleep a day. This suggests that in cases where the employees were able to get sufficient sleep were able to counteract the adverse metabolic consequences. Researchers say this finding can help employers and health care providers address these issues.
