How to Reduce Your Stroke Risk

According to the American Heart Association, there’s a stroke every 40 seconds in the US, and someone dies of a stroke every 4 minutes. Eighty percent of strokes can be prevented, if you keep track of and take measures to prevent the following.

Control risk factors for stroke such as, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and high cholesterol. It’s important to quit smoking, as it can reduce oxygen in the blood and force the heart to work harder and increase the risk of blood clots.

Eat 8 or more servings of vegetables and fruits to reduce the risk of stroke. Include whole grains and low-fat dairy products and reduce the amount of salt, saturated fats, and trans fats in your food.

Exercise for at least 30 minutes, five days a week.

Other risk factors include age, family history, race and gender – African Americans and women are at a greater risk for strokes and and are likely to die from them than Caucasians. More….
